Fountain Care

Now that you have installed your beautiful and unique tree fountain,

you will want to keep it in optimal working order.

The steps necessary to protect the copper fountain depend on temperature and severity of the weather in your area.

Winterizing

For areas where temperatures deep below freezing, even for one day, please disconnect the pump from the fountain.

If your area has extended periods of freezing temperatures below 40F (6C) it is best to use the pump to pump out the water from the reservoir. Once this has been done, bring the pump inside for the remainder of the winter and do not refill the reservoir until the danger of freezing temperatures has passed.

If water is not turned off and continues to flow through the pipes of the branches the freezing water can burst the pipes.

Some customers particularly those in northern states like to store the fountain out of the cold until spring returns.

Although icicles look pretty on the fountain, we have found that they weaken the copper leaves to the point of breaking.

Extreme hot weather

If you live in the desert regions or where temperatures climb above 100 degrees (37degrees celsius)

The copper can become so hot it may “wilt” the copper leaves. Copper is very pliable so the leaves can be pressed and shaped back into shape but it is recommended to bring the fountain (easily extracted from the concrete base) to a shady area within your home.

Maintenance

Minimal maintenance is required for the copper tree fountain. Make sure the water level is always several inches above the pump and filter a custom stainless steel fine mesh filter provided should be scrubbed clean every few months to clear accumulation of any algae that collects on the filter. This is vital. The filter has been created especially for these fountains because the mesh is so fine it won’t allow debris to reach to tiny pipes running through the branches.

Skimming the pool regularly will keep buildup of algae and debris. Creating an underground reservoir will minimize this issue.

Patina

The formation of patina on copper occurs when oxygen in the air interacts with the metal atoms in the presence of water. Copper tree fountains create a special beauty because copper is a living metal, meaning it changes color over time. Copper stands out among other decorative metals because this in-situ environment affects the changes the copper undergoes. No fountain will ever look like another as they attain their unique coloration of patina.

Getting rid of Algae

Algae grows naturally when debris and contaminants in the water combine with light to make a welcoming environment. The Algae in addition to its unsightly appearance can eventually clog the fountains filter. Keep your pond oxygenated as much as possible by running the water through the pump and fountain regularly. There are also products that can be used safely to clear the water. Here is an example.
